Uzelac paces men’s cross country team through example, heart

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- As with any fledgling program, like the John Brown University men's cross country team that rebooted in 2010 after a 20-year absence, a squad looks to establish an identity consistent with its core values, coupled with success on the course. When junior Josh Uzelac ran onto the scene in 2015, the Golden Eagles knew he was one to build around.

Once a two-time All-State selection at Har-Ber High School in Springdale, Uzelac made his way to Siloam Springs, despite juggling a commute from home and a job, in hopes of making a contribution.

He's done much more than that.

"Fearless," head coach Scott Schochler said, defining Uzelac quickly in one word, without hesitation. "He doesn't care if he's a national champion or the last runner on the team. He just does everything he can to make this program successful."

Since his arrival, Uzelac has helped drop the team average nearly two whole minutes. According to his teammates and coach, however, it's not only on raceday that Uzelac helped elevate the teams.

"Over the last three years, there's no doubt the program has improved overall," added Schochler. "There's a direct correlation. Whether he's the guy pacing workouts or leading the pack in a race, he gives his teammates something to shoot for. He also helps take the pressure off by finishing so well."

While standing as JBU's lone NAIA National Championships qualifier since the program's reestablishment seven years ago, it's not just on the course that Uzelac contributes to the culture of the team.

In fact, sometimes the mood changes when Uzelac enters the room, his glowing smile and positivity radiating from ear to ear.

"He pushes everyone to have a better attitude," junior Michael Games offered. "We know what Josh has been through, and because of that, we all look to his example. No matter what, he's always encouraging and brings a lighter atmosphere with him."

Faced with the consistent high standard Uzelac sets, teammates are left without excuse not to give their all. Despite the commute from Springdale to attend John Brown University, Uzelac is widely considered as the most dedicated athlete in the program.

"He's just always there," junior Jacob Benjamin added of Uzelac. "We all appreciate Josh's leadership. We're a very tight-knit group that loves to acknowledge God at our core. Everything extends from there, and Josh is at the center of it."
