What once began as a quarter-mile grass track and infield to serve as the home of the Golden Eagle track and field programs of the mid-60's, Alumni Field made its official debut in the fall of 1978. After extensive renovations forced the men's soccer program to play the 1981 campaign on the then newly-constructed baseball field, Alumni Field reopened in the fall of 1982.

As the men's soccer program began in the fall of 1978, the squad quickly took over the remnants of the track and field program's home field by placing wood planks in the approximately 15-inch trenches between the former track and infield, originally designed to facilitate water drainage. For three seasons, despite the efforts of laying down the AstroTurf-covered planks, players had to maneuver around the remaining eight-inch drop and return that ran the length of the field inside both sidelines.

After taking the helm of the program in the fall of 1980, former 29-year veteran head coach Bob Gustavson quickly pieced together a schedule for the upcoming season, but faced the problem of playing at an unnamed venue. Alumni Field was then chosen by Gustavson to label a field used by a program without a single graduating class, at the time, in hopes it would serve as a future gathering place for former John Brown players.

In the fall of 1981, construction began to offer a proper playing surface to the state of Arkansas' first-ever varsity soccer program. Renovations included the removal of the trenches, the leveling of the playing field and the installation of a scoreboard that remained until 2016. Tifway Bermuda grass was also laid in hopes of withstanding the brutal Arkansas summers and the occasional snowfall of its winters.

With the renovations underway, the men's soccer program had to find a new home for the 1981 season, forcing Gustavson to relocate the team to a temporary field on the newly-constructed baseball field that was erected on the current practice and intramural fields. After the center and right field home run fences were removed and the pitcher's mound was leveled, the Golden Eagles posted a 6-1-1 record at its provisional home field en route to an inaugural appearance at the NCCAA National Championships.

In the fall of 2002, John Brown University debuted a women's soccer program for the first time. On Aug. 31, the Golden Eagles defeated MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) by a 7-0 score in the program's inaugural match.

Incremental improvements have been made over the field's 40-year existence, including the addition of the grandstands in the summer of 1997 and later, the construction of a pressbox that was completed in time for the 2012 season. Two years later, in the summer of 2014, lights were finally installed on site, allowing for the first night soccer contest to be played later that fall.

It was at this game, against William Woods (Mo.) on Sept. 5, 2014, that Alumni Field saw its largest capacity crowd for the inaugural First Friday Fútbol match under the lights as over 2,000 fans packed the stands and lined the sidelines.

One summer later, the legendary pitch saw a $15,000 renovation that provided over 200 tons of dirt, sand and organic compost to be infused into the surface. Finally in the late summer of 2016, the former scoreboard that graced Alumni Field for nearly 40 years was laid to rest, and a freshly-branded scoreboard took up residence behind the west goal.

Finally in 2018, Alumni Field played host to its first-ever NAIA National Championships Opening Round, a women's soccer match against Kansas Wesleyan. Sienna Nealon's second-half goal vaulted the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 victory and the first National Championships win in program history.

Attendees of a Golden Eagle soccer match can still see, to this day, remnants of the grass track that circled the field over 35 years ago, offering a glimpse into the transformation Alumni Field has experienced over four decades into the first-class facility it is today.
