SILOAM SPRINGS -- John Brown University will induct two pioneers of intercollegiate athletics at JBU and the 1991 NCCAA national championship men's basketball team into the Golden Eagle Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 20.
Along with the 1991 championship team, long-time swimming, diving, and tennis coach Hubart "Hub" White (posthumously) and Dr. Glenna Belle Davis, who served in the Department of Physical Education over a thirty-year span, will be inducted.
Hubart L. White was instrumental in establishing the City of Siloam Springs' and JBU swimming and diving programs at the old JBU outdoor pool, known affectionately as "Hub's Tub." Many Siloam Springs residents learned to swim from Hub White. White coached many successful swimmers, divers, and tennis players during his tenure of twenty-nine years at JBU. There are many of "his boys" that still have very fond memories of "Coach White". Coach White retired in 1977 and died 1980. His wife Robbie and their three children all graduated from John Brown University. To honor his memory, the JBU pool is being re-named the 'Hub White Pool.'
Dr. Glenna Belle Davis taught at JBU for over thirty years and retired from full-time teaching in 1994. She and her husband, Jim, reside in Siloam Springs, as do her daughter Tammy Freeman and son Rick Davis and their families. Davis was instrumental in starting and coaching the first women's intercollegiate sports at JBU, which included basketball, softball, and volleyball, until the mid 70's. In addition, she was responsible for laying a strong foundation for the health and physical education programs.
The 1991 men's basketball team won the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) national championship. The team was coached by long-time bench boss John Sheehy. The team set a program record with a 25-8 overall record. Bo Speed and Kirk Walters, both Siloam Springs High School graduates, were on the team.
