SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Freshman Braydi Frederick notched a pair of first-half strikes and sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Morency made two saves en route to a shutout as John Brown (9-3-0, 4-1-0 SAC) rolled past Wayland Baptist (Texas) this afternoon at Alumni Field.
The victory is the second-straight 3-0 triumph over a team ahead of JBU in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings and also marks the second four-game winning streak of the 2013 season.
"At the beginning of the game, we came out a little flat and on our heels, but as we made a few adjustments, started connecting passes and became more dangerous in the attacking third," said heach coach Kathleen Paulsen. "I thought we had a few great individual efforts today as well. We walk away from this game and take a look at what we did well and what can we have to do better as we look to grow collectively and individually."
Wayland Baptist (10-5-0, 5-2-0 SAC) pushed the play early, but was unable to send a shot towards Morency and the Golden Eagle net. In the 13th minute, JBU almost broke through as junior Laura Garcia's shot attempt caught the Pioneer netminder off guard, but glanced off the left post to maintain the stalemate. Ten minutes later, Frederick scored her fifth goal of the season in the 24th minute, launching an incredible strike from the right flank outside the box that found the top shelf, handing John Brown the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles have scored the first goal in eight contests this season and are a perfect 8-0 in those matches. When JBU doesn't score first, its record drops to 1-3.
Frederick wasn't done, however, as the sophomore overtook Garcia as the team leader in goals in the 28th minute. After a fine effort from freshman Hannah Poor, who penetrated through two defenders inside the box, Frederick cleaned up the goalmouth scramble, sending the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 advantage.
Similar to its 3-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist last Saturday, John Brown would finish the first stanza with a third goal. Playing a man up as a result of a WBU red card, freshman Savannah Beth would collect her second career goal when her blast from the left side caught a slight deflection off a Pioneer defender and skipped into the low, left corner of the net.
John Brown out-shot the visitors 6-4 in the first half. Playing a player short the entire second half surfaced in the final 45 minutes as the hosts out-shot the Pioneers by a larger margin, this time by an 8-2 mark.
Kristen Morency (9-3-0) turned aside two Pioneer shots in the shutout victory, collecting her fifth clean sheet of the season and the 12th of her career. Keri Myers (9-5-0) absorbed the loss in net for Baptist, finishing with five saves.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles move to fourth place in SAC play, having already knocked off two of the three teams ahead of them, Oklahoma Baptist and now the Pioneers.
John Brown will now embark on its Dallas road swing, facing Southwestern A.G. (Texas) on Thursday (Oct. 24) before taking on Texas Wesleyan on Saturday (Oct. 26).
