Frederick, Poor Land First Goals; Golden Eagles Rout Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Junior forward Laura Garcia netted the opening two goals while freshmen Braydi Frederick and Hannah Poor earned their first collegiate goals, respectively, powering the Golden Eagles (1-1-0) to a 4-0 rout of host Dordt (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center on day two of the Pizza Ranch Classic.

Garcia found the back of the net in the 23rd minute to give the Golden Eagles an early advantage, notching her first goal of the season.

John Brown barraged the Defenders' (0-2-0) net the entire match, sending 19 shots towards Dordt's keeper in the first 45 minutes. Despite the constant pressure, JBU would only place a single goal on the board entering halftime.

The second half was no different as John Brown sent another 17 shots flying at the Defender goal. Just over four minutes into the second half, Frederick posted JBU's second goal of the afternoon off a pass from senior midfielder Whitney Brannan, handing the visitors a two-goal advantage. Ten minutes later, the Blue and Gold struck again, this time Garcia's second strike of the game sent the score to 3-0 in favor of John Brown.

To cap off the scoring, in unusual fashion, first-year head coach played Poor at forward for the second-consecutive match. It paid off as the backup-keeper converted striker redirected a Nicole Kosin centering cross into the back of the net in the 88th minute.

"We started out a bit slow today," admitted head coach Kathleen Paulsen who, with the victory, earned her first career collegiate coaching victory. "After we scored the first goal, I think we began to relax and started to connect more passes. The girls are stil learning a lot about each other and many are playing in new roles. We will continue to work hard. We're always trying to improve."

Five Golden Eagles found the scoresheet after rebounding from a shutout performance by Northwestern (Iowa) a night earlier. The JBU offense continued at its torrid pace, out-shooting the Defenders 36-2, finishing with a 58-12 advantage in shots over the weekend.

John Brown managed six corner kicks while limiting Dordt to zero in the winning effort.

Sophomore netminder Kristen Morency picked up her first win of the season, and with it, her first shutout of 2013. She made one save in 90:00 minutes played.

After a split on its western Iowa road swing, the Golden Eagles will return to the pitch on Friday (Sept. 6) when it hosts NCAA I Abilene Christian (Texas) at Alumni Field at noon. The Wildcats currently stand 2-0-0 after a pair of one-goal wins over NAIA opposition. ACU landed a 3-2 win over Oklahoma City before earning a 1-0 victory against Texas at Brownsville.
