PLAINVIEW, Texas -- Despite owning an 11-9 shooting advantage, the John Brown womens soccer team (7-4-2, 3-2-1 SAC) wasnt able to beat Wayland Baptist (Texas) keeper Bailey Stengler as the two squads battled to a double-overtime scoreless draw this afternoon at J.V. Hilliard Field.
"I think we're at a point where we've figured out a lot things tactically and who we are in terms of character," noted head coach Kathleen Paulsen. "We have room to grow in the final third and we recognize that. We'll continue to persevere and work on those thing and continue to move forward."
In the only Sooner Athletic Conference match of the day, both teams were able to send four shots at the opposing goalkeepers as both Stengler and junior keeper Kristen Morency earned shutouts. The only shot taken in the extra session, by senior midfielder Casey OBrien, was saved by Stengler in the 118th minute of play.
OBrien led JBU with four shots, three on goal, while sophomore forward Braydi Frederick notched the visitors other shot on goal.
Wayland Baptist (4-7-2, 4-1-1 SAC) was led by Jodian Morris, coming off a hat trick in Wayland's 4-1 win Tuesday at St. Gregory's, who got off four shots, although none were on target. Madison Abbott, Heather Terbush, Jessica Bell and Jasmine Ortiz had Baptist three other shots on Morency.
John Brown is now 7-0-3 all-time against the Pioneers. The teams have battled to three draws in their last four outings, including last season in the semifinals of the SAC tournament when the Golden Eagles prevailed 4-3 in a shootout after a 1-1 regulation-time draw. The two squads also fought to a 0-0 double-overtime deadlock in 2012.
The Golden Eagles will return to the pitch on Thursday (Oct. 23) when it hosts Southwestern A.G. (Texas) at Alumni Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
