Frey's Five Points Lead Golden Eagles Past Cavaliers, 3-0

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Freshman midfielder Sara Frey tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Golden Eagles (7-2-1, 3-0-0 SAC) past St. Gregorys (Okla.) by a 3-0 score this afternoon in front of a Homecoming 2014 crowd at Alumni Field.

Freys five-point outing moved her into first place on the team in goals (6) and points (15).

John Brown jumped on the visitors early when sophomore midfielder Sara Lachance netted her second goal of the season in the 3rd minute. The play began with Freys short corner kick that was played to an awaiting Casey OBrien. The senior midfielder then carried the ball into the box before sliding a pass across to Lachance in the slot, who buried it into the right corner for a 1-0 Golden Eagle advantage.

Frey then took over in the 25th minute with a highlight-reel strike. Lachance began the play at midfield by dumping a pass off to freshman defender Lauren Tonkovich. Tonkovich eluded a pair of Cavalier players before sending a through ball to Frey. Frey dribbled down the majority of the offensive zone, weaving around four SGU defenders. After cutting into the middle of the field, Frey unleashed a left-footed bomb to the top right side, extending John Brown lead to two.

The assists was Tonkovichs first collegiate point.

John Brown enjoyed a 14-2 shooting advantage in the first half. Junior keeper Kristen Mornecy was called upon twice to make a save while SGUs Jena Flewelling recorded five in the first stanza.

The Golden Eagle offensive onslaught continued into the second half as the hosts sent another 11 shots towards Flewelling and the Cavalier net. Flewelling came up with another three saves in the second half, but Frey found the scoresheet again in the 85th minute.

Senior striker Laura Garcia began the attack with a play up the right flank and let go a shot that Flewelling couldnt handle. The opportunistic Frey was waiting on the doorstep and collected the rebound and fired it into the left side of the net, notching her second goal of the match.

Morency made another pair of saves in the second half, finishing with four, while earning the clean sheet. It was Morencys fifth this season and 21st of her career. Flewelling took the loss in net, lowering her record to 0-3-1, as she made a season-high eight saves in the loss.

Freys six shots led the Golden Eagles to a 25-5 shooting advantage. Lachance sent four towards the Cavalier net while junior defender Julie Whitlow tallied three. Overall, 11 different Golden Eagles tallied a shot in the contest. Beth McHales two shots served as a team-high for St. Gregorys (2-8-1, 0-3-0 SAC).

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 7) when it hosts conference leader Science & Arts (Okla.) at 5:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
