SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Freshman midfielder Sara Frey netted a pair of goals while sophomore striker Braydi Frederick earned a goal and two helpers as the No. 22 Golden Eagles (2-1-1) used a 27-7 shot differential to take out Bethel (Tenn.) tonight at Alumni Field.
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Morency was tested sparingly throughout the contest and needed just a pair of saves to pick up her second win of the season and her second clean sheet of 2014. Morency now owns 18 career shutouts.
John Brown used 12-1 and 15-6 shot differentials in the first and second half, respectively, as Frey launched seven shot attempts to lead the host squad. Frederick and junior midfielder Nicole Kosin each added four attempts in the win.
JBU began its first-half blitz of the Wildcats (0-4-0) in the 5th minute of play when sophomore midfielder Sara Lachances cross to senior midfielder Casey OBrien momentarily when astray. OBrien proceeded to collect the ball up the right flank, beat a defender, and send a cross back into the middle. Frederick was waiting in the six yard box and managed to deflect the pass attempt into the net for a 1-0 Golden Eagle lead.
Just three minutes later, Frey would net her second goal of the season after junior defender Julie Whitlows long direct kick was redirected by Frederick in the box. Frey seized the opportunity and netted the goal, extending the hosts lead to two.
The highlight goal of the evening came in the 21st minute as John Brown took a 3-0 lead. Frederick found Lachance well outside the 18 yard box where she launched a bending shot that glanced off the right post and into the net. It was Lachances first goal of the season.
The onslaught finally came to an end just a minute later in what originally appeared to be a repeat of Lachances long-range cannon. This time, however, it absorbed enough iron to stay out, but then landed at the feet of Frey who tapped in the fourth goal of the evening.
“I think tonight was defined by one word, fun,†admitted head coach Kathleen Paulsen. “The team collectively worked hard, made great decisions defensively and offensively, and they scored great goals. It made soccer what it's supposed to be, fun.â€
The Golden Eagles fun amounted to a season-high 27 shots and a season-best 15 strikes on target.
Danielle Krzyzaniak took the loss in net for the Wildcats, making an impressive 11 saves in the losing effort.
JBU will return to the pitch tomorrow (Sept. 13) evening to face Oklahoma Wesleyan in the final game of the Invitational. Wesleyan fell 1-0 to Oklahoma City in the first game this afternoon, allowing a goal in the final moments of the match. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
