SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Senior Zeke Zumbro netted his third goal of the season late in the match, and the John Brown mens soccer team (8-5-1, 4-1-0 SAC) remained undefeated at Alumni Field with a 1-0 victory over Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon.
The Golden Eagles, with the win, extended its team shutout streak in Siloam Springs to 540 consecutive minutes. The victory also allowed JBU to remain tied for second place in the Sooner Athletic standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
John Brown out-shot the Evangels (5-7-1, 1-3-1 SAC), 27-13, and received four attempts each from freshmen Conner Haney and Santiago Venegas. Darko Nikolic and Gleydsen Neri each attempt a trio of shots for MACU.
The game featured just one goal, which happened in the 68th minute, when a John Brown build up resulted in a scrappy goal. Junior Daniel Marulanda started the play in the midfield by sending junior Marco Cardona up the right flank. Cardona cross a ball into the box, which eluded the last MACU defenders attempts at an interception, and landed at the feet of sophomore Collin Smith. Smith was able to get a shot off, but Evangel keeper Tyler McIntosh made a save at point-blank range. However, Zumbro was there for the rebound, which he blasted past McIntosh and a defender patrolling the goal line from 14 yards out.
It was Zumbros third goal of the season, two of which have been game-winners.
Sophomore keeper Adam Holt landed the win with three saves and completed his eighth shutout of the season. He now stands at No. 5 all-time in program history in single-season shutouts.
McIntosh made 11 saves in the loss and falls to 5-7-1 on the year.
John Brown returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 20) when it welcomes Southwestern Christian (Okla.) to Alumni Field for a 6:30 p.m. kick off.
