SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Freshman Jastin Redman pulled closer to the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference scoring race and the John Brown womens soccer team (8-6-1, 4-1-1 SAC) landed a convincing 2-0 victory over Southwestern Christian on Tuesday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Alumni Field.
Redman blasted home her 11th and 12th goals of the season in the second half, which not only gave the Golden Eagles its fifth win in seven games, but allowed JBU to pull back within striking distance of the top seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament. Redman now has 32 points on the season, three points back of SAC leader Ailee Thompson of Oklahoma City.
Neither team scored in a rather pedestrian first half. The hosts out-shot the Eagles, 14-3.
The second half finally produced some tallies. In the 66th minute, freshman Aspen Robinson collected her ninth assist of the season when her corner kick found Redman at the back post, who headed the volley in from just four yards away.
In what appeared to be just a 1-0 victory, Redman struck with just four seconds left on the clock to double JBUs lead. Sophomore Samantha Webers throw in from the right sidelines found Redman, who turned towards the goal to attack. After chipping the ball off an SCU defender in the box, Redman collected the ball and buried a low, hard shot past keeper Kaylie Naumann. Weber recorded her first helper of the year on the play.
“It was one of those days where you think its just not your day,†said head coach Kathleen Paulsen. “I told the girls at halftime that we can still control our attitude, our work rate and how we communicate. We needed to focus on those things.
“We seem to be a little flat after fall break, but a win is a win.â€
The Golden Eagle defense limited Southwestern Christian (7-7-1, 1-5-0 SAC) to six shots and only four on goal. Junior keeper Hannah Poor (8-5-1) notched her third shutout of the season with four saves. Naumann (4-6-1) took the loss for SCU despite making nine saves in the contest.
John Brown ended the match with the advantage in shots (27-6) and corner kicks (7-2).
JBU will wrap up home regular season play on Saturday (Oct. 24) when it hosts Wayland Baptist (Texas) in a 1 p.m. affair.
