MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 10 Mobile (Ala.) used four different goal scorers and posted a trio of tallies on the board in the second half, spoiling junior Hannah Poors first career start in goal and freshman Aspen Robinsons first collegiate goal as the Rams took a 4-1 decision tonight (Aug. 22) against John Brown (0-2-0) at The Jungle.
Mobile (2-0-0) sent six shots on goal, forcing Poor to make a save in each half. Poor (0-1-0), starting the match in place of injured senior Kristen Morency, finished the contest with a pair of saves and absorbed the loss in net. Rebecca Wynne (2-0-0) made two first-half saves to collect the victory for the Rams.
After a tight first half that saw the Rams control the majority of the frame, UM came out even better in the second half, erupting for a trio of goals in an eight-minute span. In the 65th minute, Colleen Kennedy beat a JBU defender and slid a shot past Poor for her first tally of the season. Three minutes later, fresh off a sub into the match, Mobiles Latesha Fleming took a pass from Cayla Hebert and blasted a top-shelf shot for a 3-1 lead.
Mobile would finish its scoring output five minutes later in the 73rd minute as Rachel Forestell launched a loose ball from 20 yards out, placing the hosts ahead 4-1.
The Rams opened the scoring in the 24th minute as Leah Corse netted her second goal of the season when the Golden Eagles were unable to clear the box after a corner kick. Corse pounced on a loose ball and laid a shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Just like a scripted set piece, Robinson countered for her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute. After a beautiful give-and-go with freshman Anna Brown, Robinson crossed over a defender by juking to her right. In a one-on-one with Wynne on the right flank in the box, Robinson calmly deposited a low shot to the far left post, knotting the score at one apiece.
The Rams finished the afternoon with a 14-6 shooting advantage, but numerous times, Poor was called upon to make an acrobat maneuver to deflect passes or catch crosses. Both teams posted three corner kicks apiece.
After a pair of narrow defeats on the road to top-10 teams, the Golden Eagles will return to the friendly confines of Alumni Field on Aug. 28 when it hosts Central Baptist (Ark.) at 5:30 p.m.
