BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- Freshman Jastin Redman hit the crossbar in the 70th minute, but that would as close as the John Brown womens soccer team (3-5-0) would come to a goal as Oklahoma Wesleyan (5-0-1) scored late to pick up a 1-0 decision on Tuesday (Sept. 22) evening at the OKWU Soccer Complex.
Entering the contest 5-0-0 all-time against OKWU, the Golden Eagles were out-shot 15-9 on the evening, but played a closely-contested second half where the hosts narrowly outshot JBU, 5-4.
Still scoreless in the 70th minute, Redman corralled a ball on the left flank and cut into the middle before unleashing a right-footed blast towards Wesleyan keeper Lindsey Williams. The shot beat Williams high, but rung off the underside of the crossbar, just out of reach of oncoming freshman Anna Brown, who was crashing the goal.
Wesleyan struck for the lone goal of the match in the 78th minute when Ana Popov lofted a long-range kick from the left flank that beat JBU junior keeper Hannah Poor to the right post.
Freshman Melody Hagen led all Golden Eagles with three shots while Redman added two in the loss. Four other John Brown players managed a shot, but only freshman Aspen Robinson was able to send one on frame in the contest.
Poor took the loss in goal, making six saves, as her record falls to 3-4-0 in 2015.
Kim Gigliotti paced the host Eagles with four shots while Ashley Sarmiento added three. Williams remains undefeated on the year, picking up the win in goal for Wesleyan.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 26) when it hosts winless Rogers State (Okla.) in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Alumni Field. The match will be the final non-conference contest for John Brown before it picks up Sooner Athletic play next week.
