#12 Women’s basketball splits pair of contests in classic action

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The No. 12 John Brown University women's basketball team mounted a comeback effort to win convincingly in overtime, taking out Evangel (Mo.) 79-71 on Friday (Nov. 17), before suffering its first home loss of the season on Saturday (Nov. 18), falling to No. 19 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), 58-49, inside Bill George Arena as part of the 2017 JBU Basketball Classic.

On Friday, senior Kimmy Deines hit 7-of-8 from the field to score a team-best 18 points and added 7 assists while junior Baily Cameron grabbed a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

The Golden Eagles shot 56.6 percent from the field (30-of-53) and connected on 11-of-26 attempts from behind the arc.

Plagued by 23 turnovers, JBU faced a five-point deficit to start the fourth quarter, but a Deines and-one early on sent the hosts on a 12-7 run that was capped off by a triple from senior Jana Schammel, handing the Golden Eagles a two-point advantage.

The Crusaders (1-4) pulled down three offensive boards on its last possession and Syndee Garrett's layup with four seconds left sent the game to extra time.

Despite Garrett's 29-point effort to lead all scorers, EU went cold in overtime, shooting 0-of-4 from the floor while John Brown connected on 4-of-5 from the field, as the hosts out-scored Evangel 11-3 in the five-minute overtime session.

Garrett led the contest in scoring and finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds.

In Saturday's matchup with the Pioneers (4-1), the Golden Eagles struggled and allowed 17 MNU offensive rebounds, allowing the hosts to attempt 12 more field goal attempts.

Despite shooting just 5-of-30 from behind the arc, the Pioneers turned an 11-7 first-quarter deficit into a 29-19 halftime lead by earning a 19-8 second quarter advantage as the Golden Eagles could never recover.

Cameron scored 12 points but no other Golden Eagle was able to register double-digit scoring.

MNU's Jovana Jovavic tallied a career-best 27 points on 8-of-20 shooting from the field, including a perfect 7-of-7 evening from the charity stripe.

JBU will now rest for over a week and returns to action on Monday (Nov. 27) to welcome College of the Ozarks (Mo.) to Bill George Arena for a 6 p.m. tip.
