Men’s soccer ousted in semifinals yet again

BETHANY, Okla. -- Luck wasn't on JBU's side as second-seeded Southwestern Christian (Okla.) survived the sixth-seeded John Brown University men's soccer team by a 2-0 final in the Sooner Athletic tournament semifinals on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 6) at the Cagle Family Field.

The 2-0 decision was SCU's second of the season over the Golden Eagles (8-9-2) but it was the host Eagles that had to weather the John Brown storm in the first half.

Christian (16-4-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Igor Stojanovic smashed home the eventual game-winner after Lucas Loureiro sent a free kick into the box that was redirected by Danny Roberts for Stojanovic's 15th of the season.

The momentum then swung back to John Brown. The visitors bombarded the SCU goal and keeper Caleb Swanepoel, firing a pair of shots and registering three corner kicks. The shots, by freshman Elias McCould and junior Kelvin Omondi, beat Swanepoel, but the Christian defense was able to block the shot attempts from entering the gaping goal.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Roberts found himself on the end of a free kick from Matheus Magalhaes and scored his fourth goal of the season past senior Adam Holt.

The hosts out-shot JBU 15-12 with both keepers making four saves.

The setback was JBU's fourth-straight loss in the SAC semifinals.

Holt finishes his career with an 8-9-2 mark in his senior campaign, but walks away with the program's career shutout record.

The Golden Eagles graduate contributors Steve Teshima, Adam Holt, Marco Cardona and Connor Georgopulos.
