McPHERSON, Kan. -- The No. 18 John Brown University women's basketball team opened up with a 23-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back, limiting the hosts to a paltry 29.7 percent effort from the field, and racked up a huge 92-58 victory at Central Christian (Kan.) inside the Ed Pyle Sports Complex on Tuesday night (Dec. 5).
The Golden Eagles (7-3, 2-0 Sooner Athletic) won its third straight by knocking down five triples in the first quarter and allowed the Tigers (1-10, 0-3) to make just 3-of-18 from the field to take a commanding lead for the rest of the contest.
Scoring at least 20 points in each quarter, John Brown rode an effort that came near tying a program record as senior Luize Skrastina set career-bests in triples (7) and triples attempted (13) as she scored 21 points, all from behind the arc, while securing seven rebounds and four assists. Senior Jana Schammel and junior Baily Cameron each registered 10 points while senior Kimmy Deines added six assists, eight rebounds and five points.
Assisting on 27 of 35 field goals (77 percent), JBU's offensive sets starkly contrasted with the up-tempo, shot-heaving attack of Central Christian, which yielded little results as CCC managed just five assists on 22 successful field goals.
Central Christian's Abbie Banks netted a team-best 19 points while Holly Golden and Kassidy Forsberg each contributed 11 points in the loss. As difficult a time as the hosts had shooting the ball inside the arc, beyond it was even worse, hitting just 5-of-30 attempt from long range (16.7 percent).
Powered by Skrastina's seven-triple effort, John Brown took its most trey attempts of the season (42) hitting 16, a 38.1 percent clip, just below the season average. On defense, however, the Golden Eagles proved the better team, rejecting five Tiger shots, and out-boarding the hosts, 62-43.
The 62 caroms that John Brown collected proved to register another season best.
Central Christian held the lead just once, four 14 seconds, at 2-0 before Cameron hit a triple handing the visitors the lead for good. The advantage grew to as many as 34, when Deines hit a triple with 7:46 remaining in the game to give John Brown a 78-44 lead.
With a 2-0 start in conference play, the Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday (Dec. 9), hosting No. 8 Oklahoma City in a 3 p.m. matinee tilt.
