Exciting end to regulation turns into tough loss for men’s basketball

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Back-to-back buckets from freshman Rokas Grabliauskas and junior Marquis Waller tied the game just before the buzzer, but No. 23 Oklahoma City out-scored the Golden Eagles 18-10 in the overtime session as the John Brown University men's basketball team absorbed a tough 103-95 loss inside Bill George Arena on Saturday night (Dec. 9).

City's Ridell Camidge proved unstoppable, hitting 12-of-22 from the floor, including 7-of-12 three-point attempts, to score a career-high 42 points while completing the double-double with 10 boards. Samuel Williams backed up Camidge's effort with 27 points and 12 rebounds, clinching a double-double, as the Stars (8-2, 2-1 Sooner Athletic) shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field in the victory.

The Golden Eagles (6-4, 2-1) had its two-game winning streak snapped, despite racing out to an early 12-2 lead, powered by triples from Jake Caudle, twice, Josh Bowling and Grabliaskus. The lead didn't last long, however, as an 18-6 run by the halfway point in the period by City kept the visitors in the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Junior Josh Bowling pieced together a career night, netting 33 points for John Brown on 10-of-18 shooting, including scoring 19 points in the second half, helping JBU shoot 58.1 percent in the period.

Facing a 12-point deficit after the intermission, Bowling's and-one jump-started a 30-13 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half, capped off by a pair of Nathan Corder free throws, which handed the lead back over to the hosts, 59-54.

After the lead had flipped back to City's advantage, 76-71, Bowling again came through with a triple, a bucket down low, and four-consecutive makes at the line after an OCU technical foul, returning the lead back to JBU, 81-80.

City responded with another Camidge triple and a pair at the line, providing another four-point gap. That's when Grabliauskas and Waller, who missed his initial attempt with six seconds left, whose follow-up bucket forced John Brown's first overtime tilt of the season.

The Golden Eagles stuttered in the extra frame, however, knocking down just 4-of-12 from the floor and converting just 1-of-6 from the free throw line. The Stars needed just three field goals in the five-minute extra period because 12-of-15 from the stripe was plenty enough to score 18 points in the bonus basketball session.

Caudle contributed 17 points while Waller registered 13 and Corder notched 10. Bowling, Caudle and Waller each dished out three assists, but Grabliauskas paced the team with five dimes.

Uncharacteristically, the Golden Eagles were out-muscled on the boards, 49-32, while the visitors controlled the paint, 42-28.

Not active until the new year, John Brown returns to action on Jan. 1 against Central Christian College of the Bible (Mo.) at 3 p.m. in non-conference action before a pair of Sooner Athletic matchups later in the week.
