Volleyball clinches third-consecutive sweep, makes quick work of Cavaliers

SHAWNEE, Okla. -- The John Brown University volleyball team surrendered just 38 points and .360 (52-11-114) to coast to an easy win, its third-straight sweep, over St. Gregory's (Okla.) on Wednesday evening (Sept. 20) inside the Sumner Field House.

John Brown (13-2, 5-0 Sooner Athletic) received double-digit kills from sophomores Jessica Meyer and Carly McKinney and junior Bayli Reagan, powering the visitors to 25-5, 25-18, 25-12 set scores.

Meyer, who has averaged 12.75 kills per match over her last four led JBU with 13 more kills and hit at an unbelievable .684 percentage (13-0-9) while Reagan added 12 terminations and a pair of aces. McKinney contributed 11 kills (11-0-24) and 17 digs, racking up her sixth double-double of the season.

The host Cavaliers (11-6, 3-3) could get nothing going offensively, hitting at a mere .079 percentage (19-10-114), registering just 19 kills in the match, led by Gabby Ware's seven and 14 digs.

"Tonight's performance was one of our best of the season," head coach Ken Carver commented. "We came out focused and executed our game plan on all fronts. We felt our serving could keep St. Gregory's out of system most of the night, so we wanted to be able to be efficient and effective with our offense. Alyssa had yet another outstanding night distributing the ball to our hitters, who were very effective in terminating their shots. To have two players with no attacking errors for the match and the team as a whole only have 11 speaks of the offensive flow we're experiencing right now.

"The team is playing with a lot of confidence, which is feeding into our level of play and execution at the moment. It's fun to watch from the sidelines to see them be so efficient and work so well together."

Senior Alyssa Arnold continued to churn along the JBU offense to the tune of 44 assists, marking her fourth match over 40 helpers in her last five outings.

Junior Bailey Sager turned in a career-best 21 digs to lead the John Brown back line. Senior Beth Brankle dug 15 in the lopsided victory.

The second set featured the closest battle at 16-15 John Brown, but a Meyer kill followed by a Reagan termination and a McKinney ace jump-started a 7-0 rally that placed the frame out of reach for the hosts.

The Golden Eagles now head to Pt. Lookout, Mo. to participate in the College of the Ozarks Invitational, with two matches on Friday (Sept. 22) and two more on Saturday.
