Women’s soccer makes easy work of Texarkana

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Five different players scored and the No. 16 John Brown University women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to best Texas A&M – Texarkana on Thursday night (Sept. 20) at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Kathryn Huff, sophomore Hannah Sweaney, junior Jastin Redman, sophomore Katherine Haar and junior Anna Brown each tallied for the Golden Eagles (6-2-0) while freshman Caitlyn Logan captured the win (6-1-0). Freshman Maggie Allen relieved Logan at the intermission and made four saves to preserve the shutout.

"Our bench was huge for us tonight, they changed the way the game moved," said head coach Kathleen Paulsen. "They're providing energy, and they're proving why they get to play. It was huge. We still have some tactical things we need to work through, but we'll try to address those next week."

Reserves accounted for three of John Brown's goals, including Huff's first-career game-winner in the 40th minute. Her free kick from just outside the left corner of the box sailed in over TAMUT (2-5-0) keeper Tinotenda Chumarda and into the right pocket for a lead just before the half.

Then the Golden Eagles (6-2-0) began using their heads to make plays happen and broke open a four-goal second half.

In the 48th minute, sophomore Hannah Sweaney potted her first of the season off a play up the right wing by senior Samantha Weber. Weber's cross into the box was craftily headed by Brown toward the goal line where Sweaney tapped it in for a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Paige Kula assisted her fourth of the season in the 63rd minute when her corner kick found an unmarked Redman at the far back post, who expertly headed in her fourth of the year, continuing the avalanche at 3-0.

Not finished, JBU would tack on two more in the final 20 minutes, as Haar collected her second goal in as many games and Brown's header from Weber and Kristen Howell built the insurmountable 5-0 advantage.

Allen made the save of the match when she stoned Texarkana's Samantha Sharpnack-Isom on a one-on-one in the 76th minute to preserve the clean sheet, JBU's third of the season.

Brown led all players with a goal and assist while Weber accounted for a pair of assists as the hosts rebounded from a disappointing 3-1 result at Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday (Sept. 18).

Now with the non-conference slate behind them, the Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday (Sept. 28) at Southwestern A.G. (Texas) to open Sooner Athletic play. Kickoff in Waxahachie is slated for 3 p.m.
