Men’s basketball falls victim to hot MACU shooting

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The John Brown University men's basketball team could not contain a hot-shooting Mid-America Christian (Okla.) squad as the Evangels came into Bill George Arena and shot nearly 60 percent to take an 88-74 win over JBU on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20).

Led by Therence Mayimba's game-high 23 points, and 11 rebounds to claim his fourth double-double of the season, MACU (12-6, 6-4 Sooner Athletic) shot 26-of-54 from the floor (57.8 percent) and converted 29-of-34 from the line to keep the lead in the clear majority of the contest.

What You Need to Know
» While the Golden Eagles fell to seventh place in the SAC standings, JBU is just two games out of first place.
» Mid-America Christian went through a 5:30 span in the second half without a field goal, but converted 12-of-13 at the line to hold its lead.
» MACU's Therence Mayimba scored 13 of his game-high 23 points, which also secured a single-game career-best mark at the line.
» The Golden Eagles committed single-digit turnovers for just the third time this season and move to 2-1 this season in games with nine or fewer miscues.

Heating up even more in the second half, the visitors converted 13-of-20 from the field (65 percent) and continued to feed Mayimba in the post to the tune of 12 second-half points. Keyshawn Perkins, who scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, hit 5-of-8 from the floor, including three triples.

JBU (10-8, 5-5) battled, however, and used a triple from junior Marquis Waller midway through the second stanza, but the hosts couldn't get any closer as the Evangels responded by opening up a 14-5 run to take a 12-point lead.

Junior Jake Caudle paced the hosts with 21 points, including five treys, and Waller netted a season-best 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, but the Golden Eagles couldn't find another double-digit scorer as the hosts hit 25-of-60 from the field (41.7 percent) and 11-of-30 from behind the arc (36.7 percent).

MACU's Perkins dished out a game-high five assists while Justin Bogle (15) and Andre Horne (11) also completed their own double-figure scoring effort in the win.

JBU returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 25), hoping to return to the win column when the Golden Eagles host Central Christian (Kan.) for an 8 p.m. tilt.
