PLAINVIEW, Texas -- Needing just 21 kills, the John Brown University volleyball team swept (25-18, 25-18, 25-23) Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday (Oct. 20) evening at the Hutcherson Center to claim its second sweep over the Pioneers in its last three trips.
Junior Jessica Meyer posted eight kills and five blocks and freshman Jenna Lowery dug up 26 Pioneer attack attempts to send the Golden Eagles (13-12, 12-4 Sooner Athletic) its fourth-straight SAC victory and its ninth sweep of the season.
Wayland Baptist (9-14, 7-8) threw up a season-best 18 block-assists, and one solo, but the Pioneers contributed heavily to the unusually low termination count of JBU. The hosts committed 37 attack, five service and a trio of receiving miscues and hit -.050 (26-32-120) on the evening.
Some credit to the Golden Eagle block effort as junior Kinzee Mayo added a three assisted blocks and junior Lindsey Davis and senior Bayli Reagan each added a pair.
The Golden Eagles, who also swept Oklahoma Panhandle State on the road Friday night, remains in fourth place in the league standings. Coupled with a pair of Southwestern Christian (Okla.) losses on the weekend to Southwestern A.G. (Texas) and Texas Wesleyan, JBU needs just one more Sooner Athletic victory to ensure hosting duties on Nov. 6 in the tournament quarterfinals.
The hosts tried to extend the match to a fourth frame, but an attacking error followed by a Davis-Mayo rejection ended the contest after the squads played to three consecutive ties at 21, 22 and 23-all.
Davis hit exceptionally efficiently at .750 (6-0-8) to pace all attackers in the contest.
John Brown has now swept the season series with the Pioneers for the last two seasons. Prior to that, Wayland Baptist had captured 11 of the prior 14 matches, dating back to 2011.
The Golden Eagles now host Southwestern A.G. (Texas) and Texas Wesleyan on Friday night (Oct. 26) and Saturday afternoon, respectively, before finishing the regular season on a two-match road trip.
