SAGU’s three-point extravaganza pins women’s basketball in tough spot

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Averaging just eight triples a game, Southwestern A.G. (Texas) hit 18 treys and only seven two-point buckets and mitigated a 30-point outing from junior Baily Cameron as the John Brown University women's basketball team suffered a 78-67 setback inside Bill George Arena on Thursday night (Feb. 15).

For the second time in three nights, Cameron scored over 30 points, including a 32-point effort tonight on 12-of-23 shooting from the floor. However, the potent Lion (13-12, 8-9 Sooner Athletic) three-point shooting effort (18-of-37) placed the Golden Eagles (16-10, 10-7) into a tough spot to dig out of having to travel in the Sooner Athletic tournament quarterfinals on Feb. 27.

Cameron was unstoppable in the first quarter, shooting 7-of-9 from the field, accounting for 15 of JBU's 17 total points. Despite just a one-point deficit, 18-17, the Golden Eagles would struggle in the second quarter as the visitors used a 29-8 scoring advantage to take a decisive 47-25 lead at the half.

In the second stanza, the Lions, which trailed for most of the first quarter, hit 7-of-13 from behind the arc, including and overall 10-of-17 shooting effort. SAGU knocked down nine of its first 13 from long range and 11-of-20 in the first half.

Cameron attempted to lead the Golden Eagle comeback in the third, scoring 12 points while senior Jana Schammel added seven of her own, as the hosts responded by out-scoring SAGU 26-18 to enter the final quarter down just 14, 65-51.

However, the Golden Eagle offense stalled in the final quarter, hitting just 3-of-16 from the field.
