SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The No. 7 John Brown University women's soccer team collected its third-straight win on Thursday (Sept. 13) night as junior Katherine Haar and senior Jastin Redman tallied, sending the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 win over St. Thomas (Texas) at Alumni Field.
The win moves John Brown (6-1-0) to the best start to a season in 15 seasons, as the 2003 edition of the squad also started its campaign with a 6-1-0 mark.
Sophomore Caitlyn Logan made strong save early in the contest, denying Aeriana Lewis's hard rip on goal, and worked her way to five saves on the night to complete her fourth clean-sheet victory of the season.
While the teams spent most of the contest working through the midfields and building attacks, each team sent nine attempts towards goal, and five landed there. Haar and Redman, however, made theirs count.
In the 38th minute, Haar stripped a Celt defender of posession on the right flank, turned and jetted towards goal. Before her defender could recover, Haar send a sliding shot over the keepers head and into the right pocket netting, handing the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The teams combined for just one more shot attempt before the intermission.
Just under three minutes into the second half, the hosts made St. Thomas (2-1-0) pay for a foul just outisde the box to the right side. Redman stepped up and unleashed a shot with pace that easily bested UST keeper Jordan Thompson to the upper left corner, doubling JBU's advantage.
UST's Siobhan Higgins led all players with three shots attempts. The Golden Eagles responded with a pair each from Redman, junior Kristen Howell and sophomore Sienna Nealon.
John Brown nearly took a 1-0 lead early when a set play freed senior Aspen Carpenter in the box for a sure attempt on goal. The Celt defense reacted just in time, blocking the service towards Thompson to keep the match scoreless.
Finally, the Golden Eagles will conclused its gauntlet of a non-conference slate on Saturday (Sept. 15) by welcoming No. 14 Oklahoma Wesleyan to Alumni Field for a 7 p.m. first kick. OKWU bested John Brown 3-1 last season at the OKWU Soccer Complex.
