SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Senior Baily Cameron turned in a 16-point performance and became the John Brown University women's basketball program leader in points scored (1,795) as the Golden Eagles poured in a season-high 17 triples in a run-away win over Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon inside Bill George Arena.
Cameron's triple from the top of the arc with 1:42 remaining in the third quarter pushed her past a program record that had stood since 2006, set by Kendra (McCormick) Knoner '06. That was all the scoring Cameron needed in the contest as four Golden Eagles finished in double-figure scoring.
JBU (11-5, 7-2 Sooner Athletic) shot its best mark of the season from long range by draining 17-of-33 treys attempted (52 percent) and racked up a game-high 28-point lead early in the fourth quarter, claiming its fourth-straight to kick off 2019.
Shaylan Coleman dropped a game-high 20 points on 10-of-24 shooting and standout Alexis Shannon was limited to just 14 points and seven boards as the Evangels (10-4, 4-4) shot 40 percent from the floor, but converted just 6-of-27 from behind the arc (22 percent).
Senior Karina Chandra paced John Brown with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore Taylor Fergen contributed 16 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night and added seven rebounds and four assists. Junior Jordan Martin finished with 11 points and six rebounds in the victory.
The visitors may have doubled up JBU in points off turnovers (19-10) and points in the paint (40-22), the Evangels had no response for the John Brown three-point shooting barrage as eight different Golden Eagles contributed at least a three-pointer in the third double-digit JBU win since dropping a pair of contests in Hawaii in the middle of December.
Hitting of 11-of-19 triples in the first half, the Golden Eagles out-scored MACU by 10 in each of the first two quarters to take a 20-point advantage into the break.
The third quarter featured a tighter contest, but a Kayla Nelson lay-up and a Marta Matamala short jumper pushed the JBU lead to a game-high 28 points, 74-46. The Evangels would tighten the contest to 14 points on three occasions, but John Brown finished 6-of-6 at the stripe down the stretch to stave off a would-be MACU charge.
With the win, the Golden Eagles keep pace with Wayland Baptist (Texas) and Oklahoma City, just 1.5 games behind the Flying Queens and a half game short of the Stars.
JBU will travel west next week to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday (Jan. 17) before facing No. 6 Wayland Baptist in Plainview on Saturday (Jan. 19) in a matinee affair.
