Gonzalez Breaks Program Record as Men’s Soccer Takes Care of SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The NAIA's leading assist man added another to his total and broke a program record as the John Brown University men's soccer team rode another freshman Jacob Zamarron brace to a 4-0 win at Southwestern A.G. (Texas) on Saturday (Oct. 26) afternoon at Life High School.

Zamarron's 20th of the season in the 11th minute broke open the scoreless match and senior Amilcar Gonzalez's helper pushed him to 18 assists on the season, breaking the program's single-season assist record. The prior record of 17, set by Desmond Bleau in 2001, had stood for 18 seasons.

The Sooner Athletic's leading scorer wasn't done, however, as Zamarron finished off his 21st of the season just 2:13 later in the 13th minute off a pass from sophomore Adrian Immel to double the John Brown lead.

After pouring on a 19-1 shooting advantage in the first half, the Golden Eagles (13-2-0, 7-0-0 Sooner Athletic) continued its offense in the second half when freshman Oscar Carballo struck for his 17th of the season just 3:47 after the bathroom break. The goal was unassisted and continued his streak of at least one goal per game to three consecutive matches.

In the 58th, Gonzalez got in on his second goal of the game as he completed his seventh of the season from junior Samuel Estrada, placing the match out of reach for the host Lions.

Senior Britt Wisener came up with three saves in the second half to complete his sixth shutout of the season and improved his record to 13-2-0. The 13 victories ties Adam Holt '17 for second-most on the all-time single-season win list for JBU keepers.

John Brown finished the contest with a 32-6 shooting advantage and forced SAGU keeper Julio Guevara to make 14 saves in the losing effort. Zamarron paced all players in the match with nine shot attempts, while Carballo added seven.

Up Next
The Golden Eagles will welcome second-placed Mid-America Christian (Okla.) to Alumni Field in the most pivotal matchup of the conference slate on Tuesday evening. The matchup will have major tournament seeding implications as John Brown will look to wrap up its first-ever SAC regular season title in program history next week.

Note
Because of the weather that moved through the Dallas-Ft. Worth area over the weekend, the match was moved to Life High School in Waxahachie, originally scheduled for Lion Field on the campus of Southwestern A.G.
