WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Limiting to just 25 percent shooting from the field, the John Brown University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as No. 6 Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) took a 95-58 decision on Saturday (Nov. 9) afternoon inside the Sheaffer Center on day two of the Southwestern A.G. (Texas) Classic.
The Golden Eagles shot just 14-of-57 from the field and committed 21 turnovers, but received a trio of double-digit scoring efforts from freshman Tarrah Stephens (11) and sophomores Haley James (10) and Marta Matamala (10).
James secured her first career double-double by grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
John Brown trailed by just eight, 18-10, after the first quarter, but the Saints (2-0) rallied to a 29-13 scoring advantage in the second quarter to carry a 47-23 lead into the intermission.
After struggling through an 18 percent shooting first half, the Golden Eagles rebounded with a tight third quarter margin, 22-21, but OLLU again retaliated with a 26-14 fourth-quarter response.
Desiree White and Kasey Saldana each scored 17 points to lead the Saints' scoring effort as the duo combined for a 6-of-8 shooting mark behind the arc. Jamia White contributed 16 points, while Sarah Mgbeike added 10 to round out the Our Lady of the Lake double-digit performances. Alexis White corralled 12 rebounds.
The Saints out-scored John Brown in two key areas – a 40-6 margin in the paint and 26-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
