CHICKASHA, Okla. -- For the third consecutive season, the Golden Eagles' run in the Sooner Athletic tournament came to end at the hands of Science & Arts (Okla.), this time in 70-49 fashion as the John Brown University women's basketball team's season ended in the quarterfinals on Tuesday (Feb. 26) night inside the Drover Fieldhouse.
Junior Jordan Martin scored JBU's first five points of the game, and sophomore Taylor Fergen's and-one play gave the Golden Eagles (17-13) an early 8-4 lead that the visitors maintained past the halfway point of the opening quarter. After an offensively lull for both teams, Fergen hit her first triple from behind the arc to give John Brown an 11-8 advantage, but the Drovers finished the quarter on a 7-0 run that quickly snowballed into the second period.
After shooting 41 percent in the first half, Science & Arts (21-10) improved to 56 percent in the second half and opened up a lead as wide as 29 late in the contest. The lopsided Drover victory came just 47 days after the Golden Eagles routed USAO 69-48 in early January in Chickasha.
Martin shot perfectly from the floor, hitting all four attempts - three of which came from long range - to lead the Golden Eagles with 13 points and five rebounds. Fergen and senior Baily Cameron contributed nine and eight points, respectively, but the John Brown offense shot at a mere 38 percent clip overall and just 30 percent from behind the arc.
USAO's Vivian Holcomb picked up her twentieth double-double of the season - 19 points and 11 rebounds - to accompany six assists. Kaytlen Johnson also picked up a double-double, scoring 10 points and passing out a career-high of 11 assists. Reyna Ammons was stellar on both ends of the floor, scoring 17 points and posting four steals.
The Golden Eagles saw the careers of three seniors come to a close as Baily Cameron, Preslea Lawson and Karina Chandra each played their final game in the Blue and Gold.
