Women’s Basketball Erupts in Second Half to Sweep Panhandle State

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The second half belonged to the John Brown University women's basketball team as the Golden Eagles shot 53 percent from the floor and posted 56 points to finish off a season sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State by an 86-59 final on Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon inside Bill George Arena.

Seniors Baily Cameron and Karina Chandra each scored in double figures in the second half, 19 and 11 points respectively, and the Golden Eagles (15-10, 11-7 Sooner Athletic) improved to 8-4 at home and keeps pace with Mid-America Christian (Okla.) in a tie for fifth place overall in the league down the stretch.

In fact, Cameron and Chandra both posted season-highs to lead the Golden Eagle scoring effort. Cameron led all scorers with 26 points, five assists and four rebounds. Chandra hit 9-of-15, including five triples, to contribute 23 points.

Panhandle State (12-11, 8-9) stayed in contention through the start of the fourth quarter mostly on the back of Addison Munsch and her team-leading 25 points. She added nine boards while Nadia Hayes posted eight points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

While the Golden Eagles never trailed, a Munsch bucket to kick off the fourth quarter closed the visitors to within eight points. A pair of Chandra triples followed by Cameron feeding junior Jordan Martin in the paint allowed the hosts to open up a 14-point lead by the 6:24 mark. Two more triples on the next three possessions began a JBU onslaught that saw the OPSU deficit grow to 28 points as JBU poured in 34 points in the quarter.

Triples provided the largest difference for the Golden Eagles. Panhandle State could only manage five, shooting 21 percent behind the arc. Six JBU players hit 12 treys at a 50 percent clip.

Martin scored 10 and pulled down five boards, while sophomore Taylor Fergen controlled six caroms - helping the Golden Eagles to a 45-33 rebounding advantage.

Junior Sara Williams hit 7-of-10 from the line to contribute seven points.

Scoring 16 points more than their season average entering in the contest, the Golden Eagles won its third game in five outings and will look to guarantee a winning conference record on Thursday (Feb. 14) night against Mid-America Christian (Okla.). John Brown defeated MACU inside Bill George Arena in the first half of the SAC slate. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
