SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Science & Arts (Okla.) came out after the intermission and out-scored the Golden Eagles by 10 in the third quarter as the John Brown University women's basketball team suffered a 61-46 setback to the Drovers on Thursday (Jan. 2) inside Bill George Arena.
Freshman Tarrah Stephens shot 6-of-11 from the field and posted a game-high 16 points, but the Golden Eagles (4-8, 0-3 Sooner Athletic) committed 17 turnovers and were unable to keep the Drover offense in check as USAO boasted a quartet of double-digit scorers.
After a quiet first half, Science & Arts' leading scorer Reyna Ammons awoke for 12 points in the second stanza as the visitors shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the field. While shooting nearly 40 percent from behind the arc (37.5 percent) in the second half, the hosts couldn't overcome a handful of missed layups and turnovers as the Drovers turned a tight 28-25 contest at the break into a game-high 17-point lead late in the contest.
Khady Sene posted her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Nadorjaye Cage finished just behind with a 15-point performance. Reyna Ammons completed the contest with 14 points and four helpers, and Tori James came off the bench and was lethal behind the arc, splashing four triples to finish with 12 points.
Stephens added five rebounds and a pair of blocks to her performance. Sophomore Marta Matamala was the only other Golden Eagle to finish in double-digit scoring, adding 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including a trio of triples. Sophomore Maddie Altman came off the bench to provide five points while junior Taylor Fergen nabbed a team-best nine boards in the setback.
The hosts controlled the glass narrowly, 35-33, but Sene and Cage were too much for the Golden Eagles to handle in the paint as the USAO duo helped the visitors to a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint. Science & Arts also recorded 16 points off John Brown's 17 turnovers.
