Men’s Soccer Finishes Non-Conference Gauntlet with Loss in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The John Brown University men's soccer team fell to No. 4 Columbia (Mo.), 4-1, in its final non-conference matchup of the season on Wednesday (Sept. 22) evening at R. Marvin Owens Field.

In the latter stages of the first half, Columbia (5-1-0) tallied a pair of goals and just after halftime bolstered its lead to three before junior Eli Jackson netted his second goal of the season for the Golden Eagles (2-5-0) by finishing off a gorgeous passing play from juniors Oscar Carballo and Jacob Zamarron.

The comeback would end there, however, when the Cougars reclaimed a three-goal cushion on Lindokuhle Zwane's first goal of the season with just under 10 minutes left in the match.

John Brown tallied five shots against the Cougars, four of which came in the second half, while freshman Kyle Hix made four saves on eight Columbia shots on target. JBU has now lost five consecutive matches.

Zamarron started the attack in the 69th minute when he played a ball across to Carballo dashing up the right side. Carballo let go a low cross that eluded Columbia keeper Liam Gibbs, but found Jackson unmarked and rolling towards goal. Jackson one-touched a volley into the empty goal to slide into second place on the Golden Eagle scoring list.

After Aaron Fernandez and Rece Gilmore potted first-half goals in the 35th and 44th minutes, respectively, for the Cougars, Nick Brandt added the third in the 52nd minute. The Cougars held a commanding shot advantage, 13-5, including an 8-2 edge in attempts on goal.

John Brown returns to Siloam Springs to open Sooner Athletic play on Tuesday (Sept. 28) evening, when the Golden Eagles host Central Christian (Kan.) at Alumni Field in a 7 p.m. matchup. The contest will air live on the SAC Sports Network.
