Bottom of the Lineup Comes up Clutch at Evangel

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Facing a 2-1 deficit, the Golden Eagles captured three of the final four flights as the John Brown University women's tennis team captured a 4-3 win over Evangel (Mo.) on Saturday (Feb. 19) afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

Extending its winning streak to three, sophomore Abigail Woodring, sophomore Caroline Hillock and freshman Ellie Swan landed wins at three, four and six singles to complete the come-from-behind win.

Down 3-2 with just the fourth and sixth slots remaining, Hillock bested Alexia Phipps 7-5, 6-1, and with the match now knotted at three apiece, Swan finished off a commanding win at the bottom flight over Neely Bridges, 6-2, 6-3.

"One thing that we have talked about constantly is that our matches would probably be determined by the doubles point, and it was no different today," head coach Mike Campbell noted. "Ellie pulled off a huge win for us, and as a freshman thrown into the match-clinching flight and to win, is a very big deal.

"I'm thrilled to start the second semester off 3-0."

John Brown (3-2) couldn't have clinched the win without Woodring's dramatic third-set win over Carly McAtee, where she prevailed in a first set tiebreak before running away in the second set (7-6 (3), 6-1).

John Brown swept through the doubles matchups, highlighted by freshman Erin Kuykendall and Hillock's thorough 6-1 drubbing of Ana Bjelica and Sarah Hutchison to clinch the match's double point in favor of the Golden Eagles.

JBU returns to the courts on Friday (Feb. 26) when it welcomes Bethel (Kan.) to the JBU Tennis Courts for a 2 p.m. contest.
