GOODWELL, Okla. -- Six different Golden Eagles found the back of the net for the John Brown University men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) in a commanding 7-0 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State at Anchor D Stadium.
Freshman Gabriel Cabrera scored his first collegiate goal and finished with a brace, while freshman Alejandro Gallardo, senior Erick Diaz, senior Jose Gabriel Rodriguez, senior Alejandro Ramirez, and freshman Amaury Jarry all contributed goals in a high-paced, balanced offensive attack. Senior Kyle Hix (5-1-3) was stellar between the sticks when called upon, recording two saves and keeping the Aggies scoreless en route to his first clean sheet of the season.
John Brown (10-1-4, 7-1-0 Sooner Athletic) opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Cabrera, assisted by freshman Kendal Madrigal, netted his first strike of the season. Just four minutes later, Gallardo doubled the lead, marking his 10th goal of the year, thanks to an assist from Rodriguez.
After halftime, JBU wasted no time extending the lead as Jarry scored his first collegiate goal just 66 seconds into the second half, assisted by freshman Marcos Miranda. The offense continued to roll in the 51st minute when junior Marco Brizuela set up Diaz for his seventh goal of the season. Rodriguez followed with his second goal of the season, assisted by Jose Almanza in the 73rd minute. Ramirez capitalized just two minutes later, scoring his fourth goal with an assist from senior Alonso Arrieta. Cabrera literally bookended the scoring in the 85th minute with an assist from Caballero.
The Golden Eagles dominated possession, producing a 21-5 advantage in shots, with 14 on target compared to OPSU's two. Twelve different players produced at least a point for John Brown, which captured its fourth win of the season scoring at least six goals in the match.
The win keeps JBU as the conference leader with one match remaining, holding a narrow advantage over defending champion Mid-America Christian (Okla.) thanks to the Evangels' pair of draws. The Golden Eagles aim for its third-ever SAC regular season title on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 29) when they welcome Oklahoma City to Alumni Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The pivotal contest will be carried by the SAC Sports Network live.
