Keys’ Early Brace Leads #21 John Brown to 4-1 Victory Over Oklahoma Panhandle State

GOODWELL, Okla. -- Freshman Katherine Keys netted her second brace in six matches, and powered the No. 21 John Brown University women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State at Anchor D Stadium on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26).

In its fourth-consecutive win, the Golden Eagles (10-5-1, 7-1-0 Sooner Athletic) saw additional contributions from junior Aubrey Winter, who recorded a goal and an assist, and senior Lauren Walter, who added a goal. The trio fueled a Golden Eagles' offense that tallied 23 shots and applied steady pressure on the Aggie defense.

Freshman Marely Fonseca (6-2-0) recorded one save in the second half to help secure the win as JBU held the Aggies to just two shot attempts on the afternoon.

The scoring opened in the 24th minute when Keys netted her seventh goal of the season, assisted by senior Elise Bosma. Twenty-seven seconds later, Keys struck again off an assist from Winter, giving John Brown a quick 2-0 advantage.

The Aggies (4-10-0, 2-6-0) responded shortly after halftime, finding the back of the net and reducing the visitor lead to 2-1, but the Golden Eagles responded just six minutes later.

Winter retaliated with her ninth goal of the season in the 54th minute from senior Renny Buchanan, returning a more comfortable two-goal cushion to the Golden Eagles. Walter capped off the afternoon with a clean strike in the 72nd minute, assisted by Brooklyn Hendricks, extending JBU's lead to 4-1.

The Golden Eagles dominated the shooting statistics, outshooting the Aggies 23-2 and recording nine shots on goal compared to Oklahoma Panhandle State's two. The visitors held overwhelming control on the tilted field, producing eight corner kicks in the process. OPSU went without an attempt from the corner flag on the afternoon.

With the win, John Brown is one win away from capturing at least a share of its eighth regular season title. Oklahoma City (9-4-1, 5-2-1) stands in the way, as the teams clash in the final match of the regular season on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 29) at 5 p.m. The match will air live on the SAC Sports Network.
