LANGSTON, Okla. -- Despite another strong scoring effort from freshman Sarah Snodgrass, the John Brown University women's basketball team was unable to overcome offensive struggles and fell at Langston (Okla.), 58-39, in Sooner Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 14) inside C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse.
The Golden Eagles (6-6, 4-4 Sooner Athletic) managed just 33 percent shooting (13-of-40) from the floor, including a 3-of-15 effort (20 percent) from behind the arc.
Langston (12-1, 8-1) dominated the boards, out-rebounding JBU 40-19, and capitalized on 13 offensive rebounds to generate 16 second-chance points. The Lions also outscored the Golden Eagles 40-18 in the paint, setting the tone for a near wire-to-wire victory and ending its six-game skid versus John Brown.
Snodgrass led JBU with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting and added four rebounds. Sophomore Abbey Sanders contributed nine points, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the arc, while the rest of the squad combined for just 13 points. JBU struggled to find consistency against Langston's aggressive defense, committing 18 turnovers that turned into 17 points for the Lions.
Langston was paced by Mikayla Woods, who tallied 17 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting. Ruth Sodipe added 11 points and eight boards, while Jordan Brown scored 16 points on an efficient 7-of-12 shooting from the field.
The Lions shot 45 percent (15-of-33) in the first half, but JBU forced nine second-half turnovers and limited Langston to just seven field goals after the first half.
The Golden Eagles return to the hardwood on Thursday evening (Jan. 2) when JBU travels to Goodwell, Okla. to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State, slated to be streamed live on the SAC Sports Network. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
