KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The John Brown University women's tennis team lost a 4-3 back-and-forth affair, coming from behind to tie the match at three apiece, but fell in the match-clinching matchup against St. Mary (Kan.) on Saturday morning (Feb. 17) inside Genesis Health Clubs – Clayview.
Despite taking an early lead in doubles play, the Golden Eagles (4-1), lost the doubles point at the top two flights. Seniors Kyla Isaac and Caroline Hillock captured a 6-4 win at No. 3, improving to 4-0 this season as a duo.
Junior Ellie Swan continued her undefeated mark (4-0) with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the fifth flight over Arsys Rojas to tie the match. JBU then took a 2-1 lead courtesy of junior Erin Kuykendall's come-from-behind tiebreak win over Shannon Finn, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Kuykendall is now 5-0 on the season.
St. Mary (1-4) retook the lead, 3-2, with two straight wins at No. 2 and 4, but then undefeated senior Lin Xin Tan (5-0) came back to oust Tracy Llamas at the top flight, 4-6, 6-1, 10-2.
The Spires took the winner-take-all contest at No. 6 to clinch the match.
John Brown makes its home debut on Monday afternoon (Feb. 19) when the Golden Eagles welcome Ottawa (Kan.) to the JBU Tennis Courts for a 3 p.m. first serve.
