OKLAHOMA CITY -- John Brown University track and field junior Jean-Benoit Merte was named the Sooner Athletic's Men's Athlete of the Week for his effort at the Southwest Baptist (Mo.) Invitational on March 30, the conference office announced Tuesday morning (April 2).
Merte not only set a personal best with his performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, he set a program record, landing him his first career SAC weekly honor. The accolade is also the first for any men's student-athlete of the track and field season.
The native of Münster, Germany crossed the tape at the 9:25.73 mark, claiming the top podium spot for the event, edging out Southwest Baptist's Gavin Duchscherer by just over a second. Merte's finish met the NAIA B Standard mark, likely placing him in the event at the NAIA National Championships in May.
