SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The John Brown University volleyball team came out of the gates firing at a .300 clip to take a 1-0 lead, but visiting Nelson (Texas) stormed back to take the next three sets (25-21, 10-25, 21-25, 17-25) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) inside Bill George Arena.
Junior Akayla Kador turned in a 10-kill, three-block effort for the Golden Eagles (8-15, 4-11 Sooner Athletic), while freshman Kate Carlson eclipsed the 10-kill mark for the eighth time this season, finishing with 11 terminations on 36 swings (.222).
One off her season high, sophomore Tessa Burton passed out 26 assists, and freshman Paige Addington continued to impress with a career-high 28 digs.
Carlson and Kador led the Blue and Gold effort in the first set, with the tandem landing five kills apiece, as the hosts hit a game-best .300 (14-2-40). The JBU serve-receive finished the frame a perfect 19-of-19 as Addington accumulated seven digs and Burton dished seven assists.
Nelson (15-9, 13-2) returned to form, however, and limited the Golden Eagles to a .109 hitting efficiency for the remainder of the match, with the Lions ending the afternoon at a .301 clip (49-9-133).
Freshman Reese Montgomery served up a career-high three aces, leading the hosts to eight total, but the 22 attacking errors, 14 serving errors and five blocking errors were too much to overcome as the Blue and Gold fell to 6-7 at home this season.
