SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- For the second consecutive match, junior Julia Lambert scored a brace – including the game-winner just 21 seconds into the match – and the No. 10 John Brown University women's soccer team ran away with a 5-0 win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4) at Alumni Field.
The Golden Eagles (5-2-3, 2-0-1 Sooner Athletic) continued its 27-match unbeaten streak against the Pioneers (4-5-0, 1-2-0) dating back to 2003.
Lambert scored in the first minute, tapping in a low cross from the right wing from sophomore Katherine Keys for an early celebration. Then in the 18th minute, sophomore Caitlin Hilson's header popped over the Pioneer goalkeeper from the left side of frame, doubling the John Brown advantage. Hilson's second of the season was assisted by a junior Summer Holmes on the right side.
The Blue and Gold continued to dominate the Wayland left defense, and in the 26th minute of action, junior Addie Craig passed over to senior Aubrey Winter for another tap-in goal as she ran for the near post.
With a 12-1 shooting advantage and a 3-0 lead at the intermission, the hosts struck for two goals inside one minute.
The 60th proved to yield results, as Lambert completed the brace by finishing off an olímpico from the left corner flag, sneaking in the service just inside the near post for her seventh goal of the season. While pressing for some signs of offensive life, the Golden Eagles took advantage of a WBU defensive error just 55 seconds later.
After a miscommunication, Keys slotted in her sixth of the season when WBU keeper Ashley Lopez came out to challenge Craig one-on-one. Lopez won that battle, but the loose ball fell to Keys, who chipped in the fifth and final tally of the afternoon.
Sophomore Marely Fonseca improved to 5-1-2 on the season with the one save required of her. Lopez took the loss, allowing five goals on 10 John Brown chances.
Still undefeated in conference play, the Golden Eagles now travel to the Lone Star State to take on Texas Wesleyan on Thursday evening (Oct. 9) at 5 p.m. before moving on to face Nelson (Texas) Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11) at 1 p.m. The matches will air live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
