Comeback in Fort Worth Falls Short, Men’s Soccer Allows Last-Second Goal

FT. WORTH, Texas -- Texas Wesleyan scored two goals early, and a late Golden Eagle comeback attempt fell short as the Rams scored with 10 seconds left as the No. 25 John Brown University men's soccer team fell 3-2 on Thursday night (Oct. 9) at Martin Field.

Wesleyan, entering the match at the bottom of the Sooner Athletic table, scored in the 10th and 35th minutes as Rudy Gonzalez netted a brace to give the hosts a stunning 2-0 lead a third of the way into the match.

The Golden Eagles (8-3-1, 3-1-0 Sooner Athletic) responded with a pair of strong individual efforts in the second half.

Junior Atim Roper converted from the penalty spot for the first time this season in the 53rd minute, and sophomore Marcos Miranda danced up the left wing and through the Ram back line before unleashing a devastating shot from an impossible angle to level the match at two apiece.

With neither team willing to accept a draw, the Blue and Gold went to push forward, but was caught on a counter-attack, leading to Joel Kisukulu's sixth goal of the season with 10 seconds left to end the John Brown four-match winning streak and unblemished record in league play.

Wesleyan (7-6-0, 1-3-0) ended its three-match losing skid against JBU. Senior Adam Tebbs made six saves on nine chances and fell to 4-3-1 on the season. Axel Tonietto made three saves on five Golden Eagle chances as the visitors struggled to find the target, sending just five of 11 shot attempts on frame.

The Blue and Gold will look to split the weekend series in Texas when it faces Nelson (Texas) on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The action from the Nelson Athletic Fields will air live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
