SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The John Brown University women's basketball team couldn't make the most of a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double performance from freshman Sarah Snodgrass as the Golden Eagles struggled against a stifling defensive effort by No. 18 Wayland Baptist (Texas), falling 79-61 in Sooner Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) inside Bill George Arena.
The Golden Eagles (13-13, 11-11 Sooner Athletic) shot just 30 percent (17-of-56) from the field and committed 21 turnovers – 15 in the first half, allowing the Flying Queens (23-2, 20-2) to capitalize with 22 points off turnovers and 55 points in the paint.
Snodgrass led John Brown with 22 points and 13 rebounds, including a 13-of-16 effort from the free-throw line, but was held to just 4-of-20 shooting from the field by the Pioneers' aggressive defense. Sophomore Abbey Sanders added 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, hitting three triples from behind the arc. Freshman Riley Gottsponer finished with eight points and five rebounds, while senior Graci Harris chipped in seven points, six rebounds, and two assists.
Wayland Baptist was led by Megan Nestor, who delivered a dominant performance with 29 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals, shooting an efficient 12-of-15 from the field. Linda Brice added 14 points and six steals, while Kaitlyn Jerden and Peyton North each contributed 13 points, combining for 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Wayland Baptist dominated inside, outscoring John Brown 55-35 in the paint, and held a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The Pioneers also recorded 16 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds, despite John Brown winning the overall rebounding battle 43-38.
John Brown will look to bounce back on Thursday evening (Feb. 20) when the Golden Eagles travel to Nelson (Texas) for another league matchup in Waxahachie. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on the SAC Sports Network.
