Women’s Tennis Posts First Shutout of Season

CONWAY, Ark. -- A dominant showing in both doubles and singles lifted the John Brown University women's tennis team to a 7-0 sweep over the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) on Friday afternoon at the Hatcher Tennis Center.

John Brown (2-1) wasted no time securing the doubles point, taking decisive wins on the top two courts. Freshmen Ashley Miller and Arianny Sira controlled the opening flight from start to finish, blanking Kelsey Smith and Gabriella Davis 6-0. Over on the second doubles court, seniors Erin Kuykendall and Ellie Swan matched that effort, overpowering Emily Saniseng and Jayden Vazquez 6-0. The Golden Eagles also picked up a win by default at the third slot, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Momentum carried over quickly, as sophomore Ana Moreno put John Brown within striking distance of the clinch with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at the fifth singles spot. Sira followed at the second slot, breaking serve early in both sets to roll past Saniseng 6-3, 6-0, clinching her first collegiate singles victory. With the match on the line, Kuykendall clinched the match at the third flight, breezing past Davis 6-0, 6-0.

The Golden Eagles continued to dominate even after securing the victory. Miller, holding firm at the top spot, dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Smith. At the fourth position, Swan had to dig deep in the second set, fending off a late charge from Lauren Adams to secure a 6-1, 7-5 win. A default at the sixth flight awarded John Brown its final point and a clean sweep.

With a second win of the season over Ozarks, John Brown will now look to finish the weekend undefeated when the Golden Eagles take on host Hendrix (Ark.) at 1 p.m. at the Hatcher Tennis Center.
