Golden Eagles Fall to .500 After Setback Against Ozarks

CONWAY, Ark. – The John Brown University men's tennis picked up two singles wins, but a strong finish from Ozarks (Ark.) sealed a 5-2 defeat for the Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) at the Hatcher Tennis Center.

Ozarks (2-1) claimed a narrow doubles point with back-to-back tiebreak victories after John Brown's (3-3) top pair of sophomore Brady Dick and junior Spencer Keeter fell 6-4 to Kento Iwahara and Joseph Guidry. At the second slot, junior Jonathan Hillock and freshman Lucas Machado battled into a tiebreak but came up just short, falling 7-6 (8-6) to Sergio Munoz and Zachary Hanson, which clinched the opening point for Ozarks. The final doubles match also went to a tiebreak, where sophomore Andrew Aylor and junior Hayes Stark dropped a 7-6 (7-3) decision to Griffin Huckelbury and Joshua Wilde.

Singles play opened with Iwahara securing the first point for Ozarks at the top spot, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dick. Wilde followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Machado at the third flight, extending the Eagles' lead. Keeter then put the Golden Eagles on the board at the second slot, earning a 6-2, 7-5 win over Munoz.

Guidry clinched the match for Ozarks at the fourth position with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stark. Hillock added John Brown's second point at the fifth flight, edging out Hanson 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). The match concluded at the sixth slot, where freshman William Prochazka took the opening set but fell in a third-set super tiebreak, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8, to Rosalin.

John Brown now begins a five-match road trip, beginning on Feb. 15 when the Golden Eagles travel to Bartlesville, Okla. to face Oklahoma Wesleyan for the second time this season. JBU defeated Wesleyan 5-2 back on Oct. 29, 2024.
