Ladies Drop 5-2 Decision at Ottawa

OTTAWA, Kan. -- Despite earning two default victories, the John Brown University women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Ottawa (Kan.) on Saturday morning (March 1) at the Dick Peters Memorial Sports Complex.

John Brown (4-3) opened the match with an immediate 1-0 lead, earning a default victory at the No. 3 doubles slot due to Ottawa's incomplete lineup. However, Ottawa (2-3) responded by taking both remaining doubles matches, securing the doubles point and tying the score at 1-1. Freshmen Ashley Miller and Arianny Sira dropped a 6-2 decision at the top flight, while seniors Erin Kuykendall and Ellie Swan fell 6-3 at the second slot.

The Golden Eagles regained a 2-1 lead at the start of singles play after picking up default wins at the bottom two flights. Ottawa (1-3) quickly responded, as Kuykendall fell at the second flight in a 6-0, 6-0 result to Paula Persson, followed by Miller dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Valeria Rodriguez at the top spot to give Ottawa a 3-2 advantage.

The match was decided at No. 3 singles, where Sira battled to force a third set but ultimately fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 to Alejandra Parra, sealing the dual match for the Braves.

In the final matchup of the day, Swan fought back to force a third-set tiebreak at the fourth spot, but came up short 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 against Camryn Medina, as Ottawa swept all four contested singles flights.

John Brown now returns to the courts on Tuesday afternoon (March 4) when the Golden Eagles travel to take on Evangel (Mo.) at the Cooper Tennis Complex in a noon first serve.
