SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Behind three goals in the first 25 minutes of play and allowing just three shots on target, the Golden Eagles made quick work in its first road victory of the season as the John Brown University men's soccer team defeated Mission (Mo.) by a 4-0 score on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 2) at Allison Sports Town.
Sophomore Juan Almanza and senior Jedidiah Hunter split goalkeeping duties, with Almanza (1-0-0) making a pair of saves in his first collegiate start and victory, while Hunter made a save in the second half while making his first collegiate appearance in the Blue and Gold.
Junior Gabriel Cabrera netted his first career game-winner – in unassisted fashion – in just the 8th minute of action, which jump-started a Golden Eagle run of three goals in the first quarter of the match.
Junior Atim Roper scored in his third consecutive match in the 17th minute when he buried a goal off an assist from sophomore Alejandro Gallardo. Four matches into the season, Roper is already one goal away from tying his single-season career best four goals, set last season.
Junior Jorge Cervantes fed sophomore Marcos Miranda eight minutes later for his second of the season, ballooning the visiting side's advantage to three.
While out-shooting the hosts 9-1 in the second half, John Brown (2-1-1) saw freshman Constantin Bauer's second of the season in the 58th minute of play, assisted by junior Amaury Jarry, closing the scoring for the evening.
JBU finished with a 15-4 shooting advantage in the match, and forced Robert Crosswhite and Jordon Shaw into making seven saves on 11 opportunities in the loss.
The Blue and Gold return to the pitch on Saturday (Sept. 6) morning when the Golden Eagles host Friends (Kan.) at 10:30 a.m. at Alumni Field. The non-conference matchup will be multicast on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
