COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Golden Eagles scored three second-half goals and the John Brown University men's soccer team turned a level match at half time into a 3-0 win at Columbia (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 20) at R. Marvin Owens Field.
Jarry netted his second and third goals of the season in the 50th and 83rd minutes, respectively, and junior Gabriel Cabrera finished a sublime passing play in the 75th minute to add insurance for the Golden Eagles (5-2-1), which won for the first time at Columbia since 1992.
The Blue and Gold carried the play for the majority of the match, and out-shot the host Cougars (2-4-2) by a 17-5 margin, allowing just one Columbia shot on sophomore Juan Almanza. Almanza (3-0-0) recorded his first career shutout and lowered his season goals-against average to 0.57.
After building momentum through a first half that JBU punctuated with an 8-1 shooting advantage, the visitors converted a near-Columbia goal – a shot that rang off the post – into a 1-0 lead. Junior Braeden Templin played a ball up the right side to Jarry in the 50th minute. Jarry danced through a trio of Cougar defenders and ripped an absolute rocket off the crossbar and in from in close to post his first-career game-winning goal.
Cabrera doubled the JBU lead 25 minutes later off the beauitul passing play of the Golden Eagles up the left flank. Junior Marcos Caballero played into sophomore Alejandro Gallardo in the middle, who flicked the ball onto a running Cabrera. The transfer then closed in all alone on goalkeeper Osman Naz and deposited his second of the season to the near left post.
Jarry completed the bookmark goals and ended the JBU four-match winless streak in Columbia when he scored another goal from the right side off a pass ahead from Gallardo in the 83rd.
The Golden Eagles were led by four Jarry shot attempts, while Carbera also piled up four.
John Brown carries the momentum into its conference opener on Saturday evening (Sept. 27) when the Blue and Gold battled at McLaughlin Field against Science & Arts (Okla.), live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
