Golden Eagles Ride Pereira’s Goal to 1-0 Shutout of Drovers

CHICKASHA, Okla. -- Senior Adam Tebbs made four saves, and sophomore Andres Pereira netted his first goal of the season midway through the second half as the John Brown University men's soccer team began league play with a 1-0 victory at Science & Arts (Okla.) on Saturday evening (Sept. 27) at McLaughlin Field.

Tebbs (3-2-1) four saves powered a clean sheet in Chickasha for just the second time in program history, and the first since 2001.

The Blue and Gold (6-2-1, 1-0-0 Sooner Athletic) concluded the match with a slim 11-10 shooting advantage, ending USAO's three-match unbeaten streak.

After and evenly-matched first half that ended scoreless, John Brown used a counterattack to strike first. After a Drover (4-2-3, 0-1-0) corner kick that was successful smothered by Tebbs in the box, the senior goalkeeper threw the ball forward to midfield, collected by freshman Constantin Bauer. Bauer played the ball directly upfield to junior Atim Roper, who passed off to sophomore Alejandro Gallardo flying down the right side of the box.

What a counter!! Andres with the game winner in tonight's 1-0 win at Science & Arts.

Gallardo then played a precise, low cross through the box to Pereira at the back post. Pereira made no mistake, emphatically potting his first-career goal and game-winner in the 70th minute.

USAO could only manage one shot – off frame – over the remaining 20 minutes of action. JBU's fourth shutout of the season, and second-straight clean sheet, gives the Blue and Gold a victory to kick off the Sooner Athletic slate.

Sophomore Marcos Miranda led all players with four shot attempts, while Pereira and Roper each attempted two shots apiece.

Welcoming Central Christian (Kan.) to Alumni Field on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 30), the Golden Eagles will begin SAC home play at 5:30 p.m. Fans can catch the action live on the SAC Sports Network and the Urban Edge Network.
