GOODWELL, Okla. -- Calum Murphy broke a scoreless deadlock in the 78th minute as Oklahoma Panhandle State handed the No. 14 John Brown University men's soccer team a 1-0 setback Friday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Anchor D Stadium.
John Brown generated five more shots than the Aggies but struggled to turn that volume into dangerous opportunities. The Golden Eagles finished with 13 attempts, yet only senior Marco Brizuela's effort in the 71st minute required a save, and Murphy supplied the decisive moment seven minutes later.
The loss dropped John Brown (9-4-1, 5-3-0 Sooner Athletic) to 15 points with one league match remaining. JBU remains second in the conference table, two points ahead of Texas Wesleyan, while the result guaranteed Mid-America Christian at least a share of the regular-season championship with 19 points.
Neither side generated much separation during a scoreless opening half. Junior Alejandro Gallardo headed over the bar in the 7th minute before freshman Ignacio Abarca and senior Amaury Jarry each missed high as the Blue and Gold searched for the opener.
OPSU (6-9-0, 3-5-0) produced the first shot on goal in the 34th minute, when junior goalkeeper Juan Almanza turned aside Ahmed Amaadour. The Aggies managed three other first-half attempts, but none found the target as the sides went to halftime level.
The Golden Eagles continued to push after the break. Senior Jorge Cervantes had an attempt blocked in the 47th minute, while Brizuela missed wide in the 56th. Sophomore Constantin Bauer and Gallardo later had efforts blocked as JBU remained unable to test Mateja Stefanovic.
Brizuela finally put John Brown's first shot on frame in the 71st minute, but Stefanovic handled the attempt to preserve the stalemate.
Six minutes later, Murphy struck for the hosts. After a defensive miscue and subsequent turnover, his unassisted goal in the 78th minute gave OPSU the 1-0 advantage and ultimately proved to be the difference.
The Aggies nearly doubled the margin shortly afterward, but Almanza denied Murphy in the 79th minute. JBU's final opportunity came in the 86th, when another Brizuela attempt was blocked before reaching goal.
John Brown finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, although Oklahoma Panhandle State held a 4-1 advantage in attempts on frame. The teams combined for only two corner kicks, with JBU taking one in the opening half and OPSU one after the break.
Almanza (7-4-1) finished with three saves for the Golden Eagles. Stefanovic needed just one stop to record the clean sheet for the hosts.
The result marked John Brown's first loss to Oklahoma Panhandle State, moving the Golden Eagles to 6-1-1 all-time against the Aggies.
John Brown returns to Alumni Field on Tuesday (Oct. 27) for its regular-season finale against Oklahoma City at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will turn their attention toward securing second place in the conference standings before postseason play begins, with the matchup carried live on the Urban Edge Network and SAC Sports Network.
