SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- After falling behind by 12 points in the opening quarter and seeing its fourth-quarter advantage disappear, the John Brown University women's basketball team delivered a decisive defensive response Monday evening (Oct. 26), scoring the game's final 20 points to rally past Central Baptist (Ark.), 72-52, in its season opener at Bill George Arena.
The Golden Eagles (1-0) held the Mustangs (0-1) scoreless over the final 8:56, forcing eight fourth-quarter turnovers to turn a 52-52 deadlock into a 20-point victory. John Brown outscored CBC 22-6 in the final period, limiting the visitors to just 2-of-14 shooting (14.3 percent) after trailing for much of the first half.
"I can't overstate how proud I am of the maturity our girls showed tonight," head coach Sydni Webb said. "We really dug ourselves a hole early, and credit to CBC because they came out ready to go and took advantage of our slow start. But we stayed steady, chipped away one possession at a time and found a way to win.
"We've talked about going 1-0 in everything we do, and instead of focusing on the deficit, we just wanted to win the next possession. That's something we haven't always had in the past, so to see our girls apply that mentality and make it real was really special."
Junior Sarah Snodgrass powered the comeback with a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, while converting 10-of-11 attempts from the free-throw line. The Lincoln, Ark., native scored nine points in the third quarter and added three assists and a pair of steals in 37 minutes.
Junior Katelyn Harviston stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists, collecting four of her takeaways in the decisive fourth quarter. Freshman Reese Thornton added 10 points and seven boards, including four offensive rebounds, in her collegiate debut while senior Abbey Sanders chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Freshman Ira Trontelj directed the offense with a game-high six assists and eight points also in her collegiate debut.
Central Baptist quickly put the hosts on its heels, scoring the game's first eight points while John Brown struggled to find its shooting touch. The Golden Eagles did not connect on their first field goal until senior Hannah McLain drilled a triple with 4:17 remaining in the opening quarter, and the visitors eventually stretched their advantage to 16-4 on a Chaning Thorn bucket at the 2:15 mark.
The Blue and Gold began chipping away late in the period, using a 12-2 run spanning the quarter break to cut the deficit to 18-16 with 8:35 remaining before halftime. Thornton accounted for six points during the surge, while Sanders connected from downtown and Snodgrass added three points at the stripe.
John Brown eventually pulled even at 20-20 on another Thornton bucket with 6:14 to play in the second quarter, but CBC responded by building a 29-25 cushion with just over two minutes remaining. Sanders converted a jumper in the closing minute before Thornton collected an offensive rebound and finished the putback with four seconds left, sending the teams into intermission deadlocked at 29-29.
The Golden Eagles emerged from the break with a stronger offensive rhythm, as Trontelj converted in transition to give the hosts their first lead of the night, 31-29, with 8:59 remaining in the third quarter. Harviston later knocked down a triple to extend JBU's advantage to five, but the Mustangs continued to answer, eventually reclaiming a 40-38 lead on an Addison Hudspeth three-pointer with 2:58 to play.
Sanders immediately responded with a triple of her own to put John Brown back in front, 41-40, and the Golden Eagles never trailed again. The basket sparked a 10-2 run, with Snodgrass supplying five points during the stretch as JBU built a 48-42 cushion. The Blue and Gold carried a 50-46 advantage into the final quarter after shooting 53.8 percent (7-of-13) during the third period.
The four-point margin nearly disappeared immediately. Trontelj opened the fourth with two free throws, but Hudspeth buried consecutive triples in a span of 38 seconds to pull Central Baptist even at 52-52 with 8:56 remaining.
Those would be the Mustangs' final points.
Junior Lilli Mindeman broke the tie with a triple at the 8:03 mark, and Trontelj followed with another from long range less than a minute later to give the Golden Eagles a 58-52 advantage. Harviston then came away with a steal and finished in transition, before Snodgrass converted a second-chance bucket to push the margin into double figures, 62-52, with 4:49 remaining.
Central Baptist never found another answer. The visitors missed their final 12 field-goal attempts as John Brown continued to create opportunities through defensive pressure and work on the glass. Redshirt sophomore Carley Sexton added a late triple, while sophomore Brianna Colby supplied the final bucket as the Golden Eagles completed their 20-0 closing run.
"I'm also really proud of our freshmen for stepping up and giving us quality minutes in their first college game," Webb added. "Ira gave us the pace we needed, Reese did all the little things, and Katelyn was a great defensive anchor for us. I thought we really fought on both ends of the boards, and although we still need to take better care of the basketball, there are a lot of things to be excited about. I love this group, and I'm excited to keep building on what we've started."
The dramatic turnaround was reflected in the shooting numbers. Central Baptist connected on 50.0 percent (8-of-16) of its attempts in the opening quarter compared to JBU's 23.1 percent (3-of-13), but the Mustangs finished at just 35.8 percent (19-of-53) for the game. John Brown shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) overall, overcoming its shooting struggles with a commanding 47-29 advantage on the glass, including a 17-4 edge in offensive rebounds.
The Golden Eagles also outscored CBC 24-9 off turnovers, 41-28 in the paint and 12-2 on second-chance opportunities. The hosts finished 20-of-24 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe and connected on eight triples, while holding the Mustangs to four makes from beyond the arc.
Hudspeth paced Central Baptist with 15 points and 10 rebounds, hitting three triples, while Lexi Crow added 11 points and five boards. The visitors committed 16 turnovers, half of which came during the final quarter.
John Brown returns to action Wednesday evening (Oct. 28) when the Golden Eagles welcome Ecclesia (Ark.) to Bill George Arena for a 6 p.m. tipoff. Action will be available live on the SAC Sports Network.
