WICHITA, Kan. -- Senior Trae Oetting poured in a game-high 22 points, and the John Brown University men's basketball team overcame a brief second-half deficit before holding off a late Friends (Kan.) rally to secure an 81-70 victory Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31) inside the Garvey Center, completing a perfect 2-0 showing at the Jack Kater Classic.
The Golden Eagles (3-0) connected on 12 three-pointers, shot 88.2 percent from the charity stripe and controlled the glass by a commanding 44-26 margin. Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures as John Brown followed Friday's 91-58 victory over Ottawa (Kan.) with its second win in as many days, building a 16-point second-half advantage before turning away a final push from the host Falcons.
John Brown's defense proved decisive at two critical junctures. During a 14-1 second-half surge that stretched a three-point lead to 16, the Golden Eagles held Friends to just one point over eight possessions, forcing four turnovers while the Falcons went 0-of-4 from the field. When the hosts later pulled within 74-70 with 2:07 remaining, JBU held Friends scoreless on its final four possessions, forcing one turnover and limiting the Falcons to four missed field goals and two missed free throws.
"It says a lot about this team that we were able to come out with that kind of energy again on a short turnaround," head coach Jason Beschta said. "One of the fun things about this group is how hard we play and how much energy and excitement we bring. Our depth has also allowed different guys to step up and contribute on different nights."
Oetting scored 16 of his 22 points after halftime, connecting on four triples and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. The senior also distributed six assists, matching the game high, while collecting five rebounds and a steal in 32 minutes.
Senior Marko Malekinusic supplied 17 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting performance, knocking down 4-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc while adding five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Fred Rogers III contributed 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and seven boards, including three on the offensive glass, while senior Jay Baxter rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points, six rebounds, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot.
Senior Judah Simfukwe chipped in eight points and four rebounds, while junior Patrick Odingo supplied six points and two assists as seven different Golden Eagles entered the scoring column.
John Brown came out firing from long range, opening the contest with consecutive triples from Malekinusic and Simfukwe before the Falcons found their first basket. Simfukwe added another trey to give the visitors an 11-5 advantage with 16:10 remaining, but Friends continued to answer and kept the margin within striking distance.
Baxter provided an early lift off the bench with consecutive buckets before Oetting and Malekinusic connected from downtown to extend JBU's lead to 26-16 with 9:30 remaining in the opening half. Rogers followed with a finish in the paint to push the advantage to 28-18 at the 8:31 mark.
The Falcons responded with nine unanswered points, highlighted by an Owen Evans triple and a pair of free throws from Isaac Jones, trimming the deficit to 28-27 with 5:16 remaining. Rogers stopped the surge with a bucket before converting a three-point play to restore a six-point cushion, 33-27.
Friends again pulled within two on a Jackson Swartz jumper with 2:11 remaining, but Rogers supplied another basket in the final minute to send the Blue and Gold into halftime holding a narrow 35-31 advantage.
The hosts continued to threaten after intermission, using an Evans triple and five points from Trey Knight to seize their first lead of the afternoon, 41-40, with 16:38 remaining. The teams traded the advantage several times over the next four minutes, with Knight eventually knocking down another three-pointer to give Friends its largest lead of the contest, 46-44, at the 14:59 mark.
Rogers answered with a bucket to pull JBU even, and after a Knight free throw briefly restored the hosts' advantage, Oetting buried a triple with 12:28 remaining to put the Golden Eagles back in front for good, 49-47.
Malekinusic followed with consecutive three-pointers on either side of an Evans trey to push John Brown ahead 55-50. The Falcons answered with a Rocco Keller putback, but the Blue and Gold seized control with a 14-1 run over the next four minutes.
Odingo ignited the surge with a triple, and Baxter followed with a steal and a bucket before connecting from long range to extend the lead to 63-52. Rogers added two free throws, and Oetting converted a steal into a jumper before adding a pair at the stripe, giving the Golden Eagles their largest advantage of the night, 69-53, with 6:25 remaining.
The Falcons refused to go quietly, however, as Brody Kreutzer knocked down a triple to interrupt the run, and Friends gradually chipped away as the Golden Eagles struggled to find another field goal. Kreutzer connected again from downtown with 4:18 remaining before Knight converted in the paint to narrow the margin to 71-65 at the 3:12 mark.
Another Kreutzer triple pulled the Falcons within four, 72-68, with 2:43 remaining. Odingo briefly steadied the visitors with a jumper, but two Evans free throws made it 74-70 with 2:07 left, completing a 14-3 Friends response that threatened to erase JBU's commanding advantage.
Simfukwe answered with a bucket in the paint, and Malekinusic added a free throw before sophomore Jack Ullom finished inside with 32 seconds remaining to restore a nine-point cushion. Oetting knocked down two final free throws in the closing seconds as John Brown scored the game's final seven points to secure the 11-point victory.
"After struggling on the road last season, this is a great way to start and gives us something positive to continue building on," Beschta added.
John Brown's perimeter shooting proved pivotal, as the Golden Eagles connected on 46.2 percent (12-of-26) of their three-point attempts, including 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) after halftime. JBU finished at 45.8 percent (27-of-59) overall, compared to the Falcons' 42.4 percent (25-of-59), and held a decisive advantage at the free-throw line, converting 15-of-17 attempts while Friends finished 10-of-17 (58.8 percent).
The Blue and Gold dominated the rebounding battle by 18, collecting 44 boards to just 26 for the hosts, including a 13-7 advantage on the offensive glass. John Brown also held a 14-7 edge in second-chance points, while both teams recorded 16 assists. The Golden Eagles committed 14 turnovers to nine for Friends, with the Falcons holding a 14-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
Evans and Kreutzer paced Friends (1-2) with 14 points apiece, both connecting on four three-pointers, while Knight contributed 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. Keller rounded out the Falcons' double-figure scorers with 10 points, and Swartz pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
John Brown returns home Tuesday evening (Nov. 3) when the Golden Eagles welcome Ozark Christian (Mo.) to Bill George Arena for a 5 p.m. tipoff, live on the SAC Sports Network.
