SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- After falling behind 2-1, the John Brown University men's tennis team reeled off four straight singles victories to defeat Avila (Mo.), 5-2, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at the newly-renovated JBU Tennis Facility.
Avila (1-1) captured the doubles point with wins at the top two flights. Hayden Carillo and Brandan Honn opened the scoring with a 6-1 win over sophomore Lucas Machado and freshman Santiago Jaime at the second position, before Axel Scott and Daniel Lozano secured the point with a 6-2 victory over junior Andrew Aylor and senior Jonathan Hillock at the top flight.
Senior Hayes Stark and junior Grant Hinkle provided a bright spot for the Golden Eagles (1-3), handling Ben Drinkwater and Robert Davies, 6-2, at the third slot.
Jaime quickly erased the deficit when he opened singles play with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory over Carillo at the third position, leveling the match at one apiece. The visitors regained the lead when Scott outlasted Machado, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), at the top flight.
Hillock tied the match at two with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Daniel Lozano at the second spot, and Hinkle put JBU ahead with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ben Drinkwater at the fifth position.
The match was clinched at the sixth slot, where Stark dispatched Robert Davies, 6-1, 6-2, securing the win. Sophomore William Prochazka completed the singles run with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brandan Honn at the fourth flight.
The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 11) when they take on Oral Roberts (Okla.) at the Bernice Duke Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
