SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- The John Brown University women's tennis team posted a 7-0 sweep of Avila (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at the newly-renovated JBU Tennis Facility, securing the program's first victory of the season.
With Avila (1-1) fielding only four available players for the match, the Golden Eagles opened with a win by default at the third doubles slot as juniors Annelise Dunn and freshman Madilyn Smith were awarded the flight. The Eagles struck first in contested play when Kylee Bragaw and Dani Jean-Louis handled sophomore Arianny Sira and junior Ana Moreno, 6-1, at the top flight. JBU secured the doubles point when freshmen Kaiya Dobson and Karen Torres cruised to a 6-1 victory at the second position.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) extended their advantage with wins by default at the fifth and sixth singles slots, as Torres and junior Avery Webber pushed the lead to 3-0 before contested singles play began.
The hosts clinched at the top singles position, where Sira posted a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory over Bragaw. With the outcome decided, Dobson followed with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Emma Koenigseder at the third flight, before Dunn posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Sammy Reyburn at the fourth spot.
Moreno completed the sweep with a thrilling 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 comeback win over Dani Jean-Louis at the second position.
The Blue and Gold return to the JBU Tennis Facility on Thursday afternoon (Feb. 12) when it welcomes Oklahoma Wesleyan to Siloam Springs with a chance to repay OKWU for the setback in fall play. First serve is slated for 4:30 p.m.
